You Want Our Vote? Then Say His Name! An Open Letter to Michael Bloomberg By Brishon Bond

kalief bloombergKalief Browder died as a result of the policies endorsed and empowered by you Mr. Bloomberg.   As Mayor of New York City from 2002 to 2013, you not only presided over the arcane and ineffective policing method known as “Stop and Frisk”, but you also ramped up its use to unprecedented levels.   Despite the fact that it overwhelmingly targeted the African American and Latinx population, you championed this tactic as one of the most useful, and unbiased tools that the NYPD had to fight crime.  Well Mr. Mayor, we both know that isn’t true.  We both know that every single credible data source shows two irrefutable facts: first, that stop and frisk does not work, and second, that it disproportionately targets communities of color.   That is part of your legacy sir, and I cannot, in good conscious, let you sweep that part of your political history under the rug with a few halfhearted “I’m sorrys”, and the hiring of Michael Nutter as your National Campaign Chair.

Not being able to go back in history and change the past is a reality we must all face.  Which means the hurt that folk of color suffered under your administration cannot be undone.  However, there must be an acknowledgement of that hurt, by you Mr. Mayor, before healing can begin, and before we will even start to consider throwing our collective support behind your candidacy for President. You must articulate the harm this process did to us.  You must quote, with unwavering clarity, the numbers that show the hundreds of thousands of black and brown folk who were harassed via stop and frisk.  You must admit that in the year 2011, under your mayoral leadership, the practice of stop and frisk reached an all time high of well over 600,000 people stopped.  And you must admit that nine out of every ten folks stopped, were completely innocent.

And then you must say the name Kalief Browder.

You must stand in front of a crowd of African Americans and talk to them about Kalief.  You have to tell them that in 2010, NYPD officers stopped him for no other reason than the weaponization of his skin, and because of that black skin, he was arrested, and charged with a crime he did not commit.  I want you to tell them that there was very little evidence against him.  Also talk with them about his family’s inability to pay three thousand dollars for bail, which meant that Kalief Browder would spend the next three years on Riker’s Island.  Tell them that two of those years were spent in solitary confinement.  Tell them of the numerous times that he tried to kill himself while he was there.  Look these mothers and fathers in the eye and illustrate to them the horrific violence  that he had to face on a daily basis by both the inmates, and the officers.  Tell them how finally after three years in what could only be described as a living hell, all charges were dropped and he was released with not even so much as an apology.  Tell them he was only sixteen years old when your officers arrested him.

Then, after all that, tell them he killed himself.

And finally admit to those black and brown faces looking back at you that had it not been for the policy of stop and frisk, Kalief Browder would very likely still be alive today.

Understand Mr. Mayor, you don’t have to do this because I want to punish you.  But you have to say his name because you want us to vote for you.   Which in essence, means you want us to trust you.  You want us to believe that you understand the harm your policies did to us.   You want us to move forward believing that you are now an advocate for us.  A supporter of criminal justice reform.  A believer in the need for better policing in communities of color.  You ask us to trust all of this, despite the fact that your history screams the opposite.   The only way you can even begin to silence those screams is to say his name.   Look us in the eye, and with the sincerest of contrition, say the name Kalief Browder.

Certainly, the narrative of white supremacy that has been articulated by our current Commander in Chief must be defeated come November.  But we will not replace one racially insensitive New Yorker with another.  Therefore differentiate yourself by showing the mark of a true leader:  Not infallibility, but the moral fortitude of a person who will acknowledge her or his errors, apologize for them, learn from them, listen to the voices of those adversely affected by them, and pledge to never make them again.  Do that, along with saying the name Kalief Browder, and you greatly increase your chance of garnering our vote.

This isn’t a request Mr. Mayor.  It’s non-negotiable.

Select Stacy Abrams as your running mate, and you even further that chance!

Until next time,

Peace 2fingers!!

    1. You’re out of your damn mind! You think Kaleif Browder is the only Black Man dead because of Bloomberg? Bloomberg is a man the killed and destroyed hundreds of Black, or destroyed their life by painting them as criminals. If you’re willing to accept his apology, you’re replacing one racist with another one.

    2. Bloomberg is a man not to be trusted. I loved in New York during his reign, and it was devastating for the poor and people of color. He will say one thing and do the other, as crafty as his switching political parties to suit his ambitions. He’s on his hands and knees now trying to get the black vote. If voted in, he’ll stand up, dust himself off, and resume his racist policies and life. Sorry, but the filthy rich must be hounded out of politics and government.

  3. I think Mr. Bloomberg is a man who can admit his past mistakes and do what this article request him to do. I for one hope he will do it. I know to get rid of the man we have this office is a must. If Mr. Bloomberg become the man that can do this, he will have my vote. I see nothing as a EX New Yorker who have seen many things he did do for our concerns that he will not honor this request.

  5. Even if he does these things, he will not have my support. Psychopaths can do that! His entire public life is evidence of who he is and how he thinks, blaming victims for losing their homes, and ramping up failed policies that blow up their lives. Yet he purports to be the one best suited to help those very people? Hard pass!

    1. Please if you’re going to comment on this post do the research first. I highly disagreed with stop and frisk, hated it and went thru my struggles with this policy. His incarceration was not due to stop and frisk. It was due to wrongful identity, big difference. Please let’s be accurate when we post these articles because it makes us look bad as if we do not do the research before speaking/writing.

      1. So what! so many others were damaged as a result of stop and frisk. Stay focused jerod gatling! Who cares if it was wrongful identity. They let a boy stay locked up and he was innocent and now he’s dead because Bloomberg and many others gave less than a damn about the people that were targeted and now he Needs your vote to do what, beat Trump? Question, has he even stated a plan as to what he’s going to Do other than beat trump? Have you guys articulated other than beating trump what it is that you want? Please don’t be blinded by bs! If he has no plan as yet, look for more of the same nonsense trump is dishing out. Bloomberg seems to have very little respect for women and let’s all remember those jails must stay full to keep the investors happy and i’m sure he’s one as well, so be clear, there will be blowbacks voting for this charismatic jerk.. You Jerod, should really be quiet with your self righteous ass. Your correction is very much wasted telling others to be factual when so many have been affected and still are to date.

      2. Truth. And the mere writing posting of this article serves 1 singular purpose. Re electing Donald Trump. I believe any and every person of color that feels so strongly about such levels of purity to hold any public servant, to themselves, record publicly all their views, comments and postions about “white people over the past 15yrs”. Then let you be judged if you or worthy of making any demands of others or if you are worthy of judging Him.
The homes of these people are built of the thinest glass it is ridiculous. I am a black man in NY raised in the inner city had run ins with police on some occasions when I was guilty of nothing. Yet with this being said, I have heard and seen so much more prejudice and racial slur comments from my own black ppl than I have from white ppl. The ignorance need to stop. black ppl not only drag each other down they drag down white ppl that try to do right by us. No one is perfect no one is with out scares of racial insensitivity. We need to stop crucifying people that can help us succeed right in the face of our sworn enemies that left be can do battle with and defeat our true enemy. Show me a leader without fault that can defeat Trump and I will show you a leader who does not exsit. We need to stop the incredibly narrow minded view. We need a President that can fix the economy, balance the budget, negotiate with big business, drain the swamp, pull free of corporate / big business interest, move Healthcare forward, bring transparency back to the whitehouse, bring American credibility back to foreign nations, restore bonds with Allies and Unit Americans.
Pandering to black peoples whimsicle demands thst we ourselves cant stnd upto, is extremely far down the list of what we need from our next candidate. It is not a matter of whether there were some mistakes are not in the past.
Its a matter of the Entire picture. Bloomberg has done more in his philanthropy for people of color than Any of the people of color have done for each other that are choosing to drum up these negatives. These people are truly cutting they noses off inorder to “Spite their face” wake up, be woke. You are doing us more harm than Good. Trump is laughing in our faces and licking his chops for Bernie Sanders to get the nomination. Wake up people. There is not a man or woman at their that hasnt done something to offend black ppl at some point or another. We already know this so what purpose does it serve chopping down anyone that can help facilitate our interest? Wake the “expelitive” UP!

His recent quotes coming to light highlight his racist perceptions and notions, his sexual assault settlements and non-disclosure agreements…he is Trump calling himself a Democrat. If he is nominated and you vote for him, you have no right to ever speak out against Trump. DEMAND A CANDIDATE WHO SPEAKS TO YOUR INTERESTS, NOT THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS!!!

  12. Thank you for writing this important article. There were a few incorrect statements, however, that should be corrected for accuracy. Kalief was not sent to Rikers because his family could not set bail. The bail was 3000 and the family raised the 10% (300) to get him out. He was denied bailed because he was on probation for stealing a truck when he was 16. That case, however, was another example of a racially biased justice system

Now WE are talking about:THINKING – CONSIDERING WITH JUST AN OPEN LETTER. Is that going to bring him back to his FAMILY, FRIENDS ETC? I CAN’T TELL YOU TO VOTE FOR HIM BUT OPEN YOUR EYES, DON’T GET PLAYED BY HIM – HE NEEDS US WE DON’T NEED HIM. WE ARE POWERFUL RACE PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT

  14. The only bigot is the one not realized. Black folk get over it! An apology changes nothing, as far as the plight of black America. All politicians do what’s expedient and Bloomberg will be no different. Whatever he says now will simply be for our support. Politics makes strange bedfellows. No one is coming to save US, so stop demanding ineffective apologies. He had ample time to apologize before now yet he didn’t so no apology now is sincere. One commentator said that Bloomberg is the lesser of “two evils” and she will not vote for him. Take off your rose-color glasses and realize that we need to support whoever will be the Democratic nominee. If we don’t we’re handing Trump another four years. One thing is certain a Bloomberg administration will look nothing like 45’s, so there’ll be some benefit to supporting him, should he become our nominee. Our single focus should be sending Trump back to Mar-a-Lago. We have to stay laser focus otherwise we’d end up missing the train and having buyer’s remorse come November 4.

  15. I agree with Marsha Harrison. He knew the Stop and Frisk policy was racist from the start. This is why policies exist in the police departments, either to target an action or target a certain population. The drive and money that Bloomberg is putting into the race for president is somewhat scary to me. If he really wanted the minority vote he would have apologized first and spent millions on a commercial telling how wrong it was to target people of color.
He’s too old and too powerful to change. That’s a NO vote for me.

    1. The fact that you disagree with the letter makes it dumb? Not by far. Just because you fear truths does not make them lies. Actual footage alone was enough to tell the story. It was a documentary about Khalif Browder, which means it told HIS story and because there was no other side to tell no one dared to even try to falsify a different side. Because every part of what happened to him was wrong. DEAD wrong.

  20. I was contacted yesterday by Bloomberg’s campaign. They wanted to know if I would support him. I said, “No,” I see Barack Obama supporting him. So here’s the deal…

Let’s do Brishon Bond’s open letter, again, but change “Mr. Mayor” to “Mr. President,” change “Mr. Bloomberg” to “Mr. Obama,” change “Stop and Frisk” to “Race to the Top,” and change “Kalief Browder” to the name of any one of the growing numbers of Black children and teachers who commit suicide.

Oh, how quickly a frog will react when placed in hot water. But put the frog is comfortable water and gradually turn up the heat, the frog will sit there and cook to death. Such is the difference between Bloomberg’s “Stop and Frisk” and Obama’s “Race to the Top.”

If “we” can ask Bloomberg to apologize, “we” surely can ask Obama to apologize.

Come to think of it, Obama has been asked to apologize…

  28. I get sick and tired of those who speak on the stop and frisk policy in NYC and never stepped foot in the city. As I proud black man, husband and father who has started an organization in NYC almost thirty years ago and continue to work with other organizations designed to uplift and inform our community, I with my four sons and three daughters (who fit the age and race demographic) lived through this unjust policy. Yes it was wrong, hateful, ill informed and especially racist, however it ALWAYS was around since I was a child growing up in Brooklyn during the ’60’s though it was called “stop and kill.” When young black men would run from the police in fear of beaten and or murdered. So when guiliani (yes I know how I spelled it) reinstituted quietly, it was running amok then. The difference is while the former racist mayor wanted young black and hispanic youth locked away solely on race, Mayor Bloomberg (in my belief) continued it to bring down crime. Again yes wrong and horrible way to go about it and his so called apology sucks, however let’s be clear why he did it. If I or even you was mayor and the question was posed to you as a long term resident of NYC, “where’s the most concentrated area of crime in our city”, trust me your answer would not be Brooklyn Heights. So before you people who know nothing but what you read about NYC and the affect it had on young black and brown people, try speaking to one who lived or should I say survived through it. Again yes horrible and damaging mistake on Bloomberg that led to a gleeful hate-filled appreciation and approved licenced hunt amped up by the undenying racist NYPD and it’s cohorts the NYC judicial system. Bottom line I know of a man who tried, talked to the people, traveled to work and conversed with us on the train (yes those trains you couldn’t pay half of you to ride just one stop) who can toe to toe, dollar to dollar (please don’t tell me money doesn’t count cause it always has) and win against this sick twisted deranged out of control incestuous criminal orangutan who most be a one term missed wonder to allow us the opportunity to regain our democracy and revered standing we once held worldwide!
